With a knife remove crust from bread and from center of loaf cut cross-wise five 1-1/2 inch thick slices. Diagonally quarter the slices. In a large kettle heat 2 inches of oil over moderate heat until 375°F. In a large bowl wisk together the remaining ingredients. Dip bread wedges in the batter (DO NOT LET BREAD SOAK) let excess drip off. Fry wedges in hot oil turning frequently, until golden brown on all sides, about 2 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Dust with confectioner's sugar and serve with maple syrup or any topping.
Einar, I made this at work this morning. I can't wait to take some home for my wife to try. I served it with blueberry jam on the side. Oh my God was it good!
