grapefruit

The grapefruit was originally discovered in Barbados around 1750 and was called one of the seven wonders of Barbados. Today, the most popular producers of grapefruit are Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.

The grapefruit tree is an evergreen that typically grows to 20 feet in height. Its fruit is yellow-skinned and round, with an acidic and juicy segmented pulp. Other varieties include the white grapefruit, pink grapefruit and ruby red grapefruit.

Select grapefruit with thin, fine-textured, bright skin that are firm and springy when pressed. Store at room temperature for 1 to 2 days or in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
