This is a great recipe and happens to be virtually identical to how I've been making margaritas for years dating back to my bar-tending days as well. The only thing I would do differently is add just a splash of orange juice. It takes the edge off the tequila and mellows the drink to make it perfect.

Instructions
To make the simple syrup:
Mix sugar and water in a small sauce pan. Bring to a gentle boil, about 5-10 minutes. Once the sugar has dissolved in the water, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.
To prepare citrus:
Squeeze the juice from 6 lemons and 6 limes into a container. Cut up rinds into small chunks (approximately 8 chunks to one lime and 16 chunks to one lemon).
To make one margarita:
Put a handful of ice and 3 lemon rind chunks and 3 lime rind chunks into a cocktail shaker or pint glass. Muddle using a muddler.
Pour in one shot each of simple syrup, Tequila, lemon/lime juice and 1/2 shot Grand Marnier. Stir well.
Wipe a lemon rind around the rim of a glass and dip it in salt. Put a handful of ice in the glass and pour in the margarita mixture.
Drink. Repeat.
