Follow instructions to make cake as directed on box. Place cupcake liners in muffin tin. Pour cake batter 2/3 of the way into liners.
In a separate bowl, mix together the cream cheese, sugar, egg and chocolate chips. Drop by the tablespoonful into the center of the cake mix. This will sink down into the mix on its own during cooking. Cook at 350°F as directed on cake mix box for cupcakes.
You cannot test the center to see if they are done due to filling. You will know they are done when the tops are springy to the touch.

These have always been a favorite in my family and are often requested instead of cake at birthday time. Excellent served with a very cold glass of milk!
These were moist, sweet and rich without any frosting. If I make it again I would reduce the amount of the filling by using only 6 oz. of chocolate chips. A whole bag of chocolate chips made too much filling, it didn't sink and didn't look very attractive. They still tasted very good.
