Ingredients
| 2 cups | dates, chopped | | 1 cup | hot water | | 1 cup | sugar | | 2/3 cup | shortening | | 2 | eggs | | 1-1/2 cup | all-purpose flour | | 1 tsp. | baking soda | | 1/2 tsp. | salt |
Topping
| 1 cup | semisweet chocolate chips | | 1/2 cup | packed brown sugar | | 1/2 cup | nuts, chopped |

Instructions
In a bowl, combine dates and water; set aside to cool (Do not drain). In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Add dates. Pour into a greased and floured 9x13-inch baking pan. Combine the topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
