Chop 1/2 c. of the walnuts coarsely-reserve for the topping. Chop remaining 1/2 c. walnuts fine. Combine flour, brown sugar and butter. Blend to fine crumbs. Add coconut and finely chopped nuts. Mix well. Reserve 1/2 c. of this mixture. Pat remaining mixture into 9x13 greased & floured pan. Bake 12-15 minutes at 350°F until edges are light brown. Mix sugar and cream cheese. Stir in egg and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Spread over hot layer. Bake additional 10 minutes longer. Remove and spread with cherry filling and sprinkle with remaining walnuts and reserved crumb mixture. Bake 15 minutes. Cool. Serve as is or top with whipped cream or ice cream.
