clove

Used as a spice for millenia, the clove is the sun-dried flower bud of the clove tree. Cloves are brown and small, about 1/2-inch long with a 1/6-inch bulbous head at one end. Traditionally, cloves have been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. During the Middle ages, oranges studded with cloves were thought to ward off the plague.

Cloves are used in conjunction with cinnamon and nutmeg to spice autumn dishes such as pumpkin pie and apple cider. They are used to spice meat and game recipes, and are used often in Indian spice mixtures and to flavor basmati rice.
