A period of 40 weekdays, lasting from Ash Wednesday to Easter, during which a Christian abstains from specific foods. Originally, the diet forbade the intake of meat, animal fat and eggs, which left the Christian to diet on fish, bread and vegetables. Today, however, the specified food is self-chosen, meaning the Christian will choose the food or device from which they wish to abstain.
