Total Time:

Ingredients:

2 pkg. yeast
1 tsp. honey
1/2 cup warm water
1/4 cup honey
1/3 cup raisins
1/4 cup brown sugar
1-3/4 cups milk, room temperature
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 tbsp. salt
1-1/2 cups rye flour
2-1/2 cups regular flour
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Directions:

Mix yeast, honey and warm water. Let sit until yeast is dissolved. Process the honey, raisins, and brown sugar in a food processor or mix very thoroughly with spoon. Add to yeast mixture. Add milk, butter and salt. Mix thoroughly. Add flours. Mix thoroughly.

Blend as normal for bread, and knead, let rise, punch down, and shape into two roundloaves. Bake at 375°F about thirty minutes.

User Reviews:

Fantastic--we made this as part of a
homeschooling lesson, and yum! I adore squaw
bread, and have been looking for a recipe.
Thanks!

Didn't have any trouble--dough is a bit sticky
but it's ok that way, just oil bowl and top of
dough and cover w/damp warm cloth--let rise

It seemed like I needed more flour to make the dough unsticky enough to knead. After adding more and more flour, I finally gave up and just dumped it into a bowl to rise, all the while worrying furiously about whether I did it right. But it turned out absolutely delicious. I have tried lots of bread recipes, and this is one of the best.
