Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. vegetable shortening or Crisco
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 md. ripe banana, mashed
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon (or mace)
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Vegetable shortening, for frying
Confectioner's sugar

Directions:

Sift together dry ingredients. Beat shortening until creamy, then add sugar and beat until light. Add egg and beat in well. Then add buttermilk, banana, spices, and vanilla; blend. Put onto a floured board, knead lightly, and roll to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut dough with a doughnut cutter. Fry in hot deep oil until nicely browned; drain on paper towels and dust with confectioners' sugar.
