Ingredients:

1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 cup water
3 fresh or frozen blackberries or a mixture of berries

Whiligigs:
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. shortening
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tbsp. milk
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. grated lemon peel
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

Directions:

Berries:
In a saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and cinnamon from the berry ingredients. Add water. Cook until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in berries and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Pour into a greased 8 square baking pan. Set aside. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening untilcoarse crumbs form. In another bowl, mix egg and milk. Add to flour mixture; mix to make a smooth dough. Knead for several minutes. Roll into a 12x8-inch rectangle. Spread with butter. Combine sugar, lemon peel and cinnamon; sprinkle over dough. Starting at a long end, roll up; seal edges. Cut into 9 slices. Place slices (still rolled up) over berry mixture. Bake at 400°F for 22-25 minutes or until golden brown.
