Ingredients:

2-3/4 cups flour
2-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 cup shortening
3 eggs
2-1/2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pkg. chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:

In a saucepan, melt the shortening. When cooled slightly, add eggs and beat well. Add the brown sugar, mixing well to breakup lumps. Pour into a large bowl; set aside. Sift together the dry ingredients. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, using an electric mixer. While blending, add vanilla. Fold in the chocolate chips and nuts. Pour into a greased 9x11-inch pan and bake for 35 minutes in a 350°F oven.
