Ingredients:

3/4 cup soft shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2-1/4 cups sifted flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinamon
3/4 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. ginger (or ginger and some chopped crystallized ginger)

Directions:

Mix together the soft shortening, brown sugar, egg and molasses. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. Gradually stir in with the shortening mixture. Chill dough at least two hours. Roll in balls, dip in white sugar. Place on cookie sheet. Sprinkle each with 2 or 3 drops of water. Bake just until set, but not hard , at 375°F for about 10 minutes.
