Servings:

2 to 3 dozen

Prep. Time:

1:15

Total Time:

3:00

Ingredients:

3/4 cup shortening or unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. salt

Directions:

Mix together all dry ingredients (not including sugar). Then set aside. Cream together all other ingredients (including sugar). Slowly add dry ingredients. Mix until fluffy. Chill in refrigerator for about 1 hour. Lightly spray a baking sheet with oil or non-stick spray. Roll into 1-inch balls, then roll in sugar before putting them on the baking sheet. After they're on the baking sheet, lightly sprinkle water on them for a nice crackle finish. Bake at 375°F for 8 minutes.

Comments from Denise Velasco :

I recommend using stoneware to bake the cookies on but it's not necessary.
This is the recipe that my grandmother and I used to make for the holidays.
My husband loves this recipe!
