Total Time:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 pinch ground cloves
1 pinch salt
3/4 cup dates, chopped
1 cup applesauce

Topping:
1/2 cup icing sugar
2 tsp. orange juice

Directions:

In bowl, beat butter with sugar; beat in egg and vanilla.

In separate bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, cloves and salt; stir in dates. Fold flour mixture into butter mixture alternately with applesauce, making 3 additions of dry and 2 of applesauce. Spread in greased 8-inch square cake pan. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 30 minutes or until tester inserted into centre comes out clean. Let cool completely on rack.

Topping:
In small bowl, whisk together icing sugar and orange juice; drizzle over cake. Cut into bars.

Bars can be covered and stored in refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen in airtight container for up to 1 month.

Comments from Kathleen Morrison :

Use unsweetened applesauce for best flavour.
