mango | mangoes

Definition # 238

The mango tree originated in India and was introduced to Brazil, Africa, Mexico and Florida in the 18th and 18th centuries. The tree produces an oblong-shaped tropical fruit that can be colored green, yellow, orange, red or violet, depending on the amount of sun exposure the skin has received (greenish for less sun, reddish for more sun).

The mango's juicy flesh clings to a flat pit. The flesh is soft and aromatic with a sweet taste on the front of the palate and an acidic finish.

Mangoes are often used in chutneys, and can be made into sorbets, jams and marmalades.
