déjeuner

Definition # 212

The French word for lunch. Literally translated, déjeuner means "to break one's fast." The French term for breafast is petit déjeuner, because after Revolutionary times it became customary to eat dinner, called dîner, in the evening after the workday was complete. In order to make it through the day, the French inserted a second breakfast, déjeuner, that was larger than the first.
